The Faculty of Ethnolinguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and the Prof. Tadeusz Zgółka Foundation would like to invite you to participate in the International Conference

ETHNOLINGUISTIC DEBATES

Language in Cultures, Cultures in Languages

which will take place on 15-16 September 2025 in Poznań, Poland. The conference envisages a hybrid mode (stationary in Poznań and online).

We cordially invite researchers in linguistics, cultural anthropology, sociology and cultural theory, literary studies, translation theory and practice to debate the ways in which language shapes cultural identity and vice versa, how cultural contexts influence language use and development.

The aim of the conference is to deepen understanding of the interplay between language and culture, to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, to emphasise the importance of maintaining linguistic (including within a single language – polycentrism) and cultural diversity, and to explore the impact of technological advances on language and culture.

We anticipate the presentation of 15-minute papers covering the following areas:

1. Language and cognition

  • Linguistic relativism
  • Cultural perception
  • Theory of the Linguistic Image of the World
  • Language and cognition and world view

2. Language and identity: the role of language in cultural self-expression

  • The influence of language on individual and group identity
  • Inclusive language in different cultures
  • Analysis of the role of dialects and sociolects in cultural expression
  • The impact of language loss on cultural identity
  • Linguistic challenges and adaptations of migrant communities
  • Language preservation and transformation in the diaspora

 3. Multilingualism and cultural integration

  • Dynamics of multilingual societies
  • Benefits and challenges of multilingual education
  • Challenges of cultural integration
  • The future of minority languages in a globalised world
  • Translation in intercultural relations

 4. Language, power and social hierarchies

  • The impact of language on social stratification and power dynamics
  • Language policy and its impact on minority languages and cultures
  • Language standardisation policies and their cultural implications
  • Feminatives and changing social dynamics

5. The digital age: language evolution and cultural change

  • How digital communication is changing language use and cultural practices
  • The impact of social media on linguistic diversity and innovation
  • Preserving language heritage in the digital age
  • Artificial intelligence – applications and risks

 6. Cultural narratives and storytelling traditions

  • The role of oral traditions in the preservation of cultural heritage
  • Comparative studies of storytelling in different cultures
  • Impact of written and visual media on traditional narratives

7. Language education and cultural competence

  • Teaching languages and cultures
  • The importance of cultural competence in language education
  • Children of migrants in the education system

The conference will be held in a hybrid format – possibility to participate stationary and online (MS Teams platform).

The working languages of the conference: English, Polish, Spanish.

by 15.06.2025. Confirmation of acceptance of the paper will be sent by the organisers after the evaluation of the abstracts by the scientific committee by 30.06.2025.

The conference fee for participants is:

  1. stationary participants 380 PLN/ 95 EUR (it is not possible to pay the conference fee on site)
  2. participants on the MS Teams platform PLN 250 / EUR 55.

and includes: IT costs, conference materials, coffee breaks and publication of selected papers.

All other costs (travel, accommodation, meals, medical insurance) are borne by the participants or delegating institutions.

After fulfilling the editorial requirements and obtaining positive reviews, the articles will be published in a multi-author peer-reviewed monograph.
